With 846 Squadron on HMS Tracker

George joined HMS Tracker on the 14th March 1944 as reserve Aircrew for No 846 Squadron Fleet Air Arm.

HMS Tracker left the Clyde (Glasgow) for Loch Ewe in Scotland on the 25 March 1944 to take up escort duties with Convoy  JW58  for Russia, and arrived the next day.

Left Loch Ewe for Scapa Flow in the Orkney's and arrived in the afternoon of the 26th. They then left Scapa Flow to join the escorts for convoy JW 58 on the 28th March, and joined the convoy on the 29th, which had sailed from Liverpool on the 27th March.

The convoy was made up of 50 Merchant ships and 43 escort vessels, the largest Russian convoy of the war. They arrived in the Kola inlet Murmansk Russia on the 4th April 1944, no merchant ships having been lost.

On the voyage ,846 Sqdn assisted with the sinking of U-288 on the 1st April and two days later sinking U-355

On the 7th April 1944 she left the Kola inlet with convoy RA 58, made up of 38 merchant ships and 26 escorts. On the 13th April it detached from the convoy and headed towards the Clyde for repairs, arriving on the 14th April.

The convoy arrived at Loch Ewe on the 14th April with no ships lost.

George then left HMS Tracker and 846 squadron on the 28th April 1944 for a new squadron draft at Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus. From here he joined No 852 Squadron on the 4th June 1944 ready for embarkation  on to HMS Nabob.
